RGB Gray - Touch Up Layer

Touching Up Dust & Scratches

Create a new layer and name it "Touch Up".

Make sure you are on the top most layer in the Layers Palette. This should be the Burn & Dodge Layer according to the workflow presented in these tutorials. Next, click on the New Adjustment Layer Icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette (looks like a ying / yang symbol). Name the new layer "Touch Up".

Clone Stamp Tool - Normal Mode

Select the Clone Stamp Tool in the Tool Palette. It looks like a rubber stamp. In this example, the tool is used in the Normal Blend Mode. This is a good starting point. Learn this, and then try the next two advanced techniques. In the Tool Bar, make sure the mode is set to Normal. Make sure the Opacity is 100%. Make sure that Aligned is checked, and that you are sampling ALL LAYERS.

Clone Stamp Tool - Lighten Mode

This mode is useful if you have dark spots in a light toned area. For instance, if I have a dark scratch in a cloud scene on my image. This mode will take the dark scratch and force the tones of the scratch to become as light as the nearby tones.

Clone Stamp Tool - Darken Mode

This mode is useful if you have white spots in a dark toned area. For instance, if I have a white dust in a dark shadow on my image. This mode will take the white dust and force the tones of the dust to become as dark as the nearby tones.

Clone Stamp Tool Operation

No mater which mode you use, the procedure is the same. Find the spot you want to get rid of. Set the size of the Clone Stamp Tool using the bracket keys. Make the size just about the same as the spot you want to get rid of. Move the mouse over slightly to the side of the spot to an area that has the tones you want to see in that spot. Hold down the Option Key and you will see a target symbol. Click the mouse once while holding down the Option Key. Let go of the Option Key. Next, move the mouse over the spot you wish to replace. Click the mouse. You should see the spot "disappear". It has really be replaced by the pixels you previously sampled. Remember to sample as you move around to different spots.
